Re: Tax software version

I am switching back to TurboTax after several years and I'm wondering if I can get away with the basic version. I have investing stuff to report -- 1099-INT, 1099-DIV and 1099-B, with the need to enter individual stock sales into Schedule D. [more]

Re: Income Investor substitute

Have you looked at Morningstar Dividend Investor? It is a portfolio service, rather than a stock picking service, so you're not getting a new stock pick each month, rather they adjust their portfolios over time, sometimes buying new stocks, at [more]

Re: IRA rollover: New account or use existing on

Hi AJ,

Thanks again for your insight. FYI I don't have an issues with Medicard (since I am in my early 50s). So far I had only ever planned to fill the 0% tax bracket, but since my 401(k) has a balance of about $820k that would only be [more]

Re: IRA rollover: New account or use existing on

Check with the IRA administrator. I am moving an inherited rollover IRA. It couldn't be moved to just an inherited IRA. An inherited rollover IRA was required.

vkg,

Thanks so much for bringing this up, I'd have never [more]

Re: IRA rollover: New account or use existing on

AJ,

Thanks so much for your very detailed response to my question. Please allow a follow-up question to one aspect you mentioned:

Unless the tax laws change (always a possibility), rates are scheduled to return to the old, mostly [more]

IRA rollover: New account or use existing one?

Hello,

I am contemplating to roll the 401(k) with my previous employer into an IRA to do bit-by-bit Roth conversions over the next decade or two.

I already do have an existing IRA account, which I used in the past for nondeductible [more]

Re: Wash sale rules when exercising call options

Just another non-logical tax rule, I guess.

AJ

Actually I find it surprisingly logical (for a tax rule that is).

Since the wash sale rule is designed to prevent you from taking a tax loss on a security you intend to [more]

Re: Wash sale rules when exercising call options

That said - to me, a call option is not a 'substantially identical' since it may or may not be exercised. If it expires unexercised, how would you have had a wash sale? It's only upon exercising the call option to buy the stock that [more]

Re: Wash sale rules when exercising call options

You don't understand correctly. The options are not substantially identical to the underlying shares. A wash sale may be created when you exercise the option. The purchase date for the option is irrelevant to the determination of whether the [more]

Re: OT, using VPN?

With the latest computer vulnerabilities being in the news, I'm just wondering how many use a virtual private network (VPN). I never have. Maybe I should?
I see that some can be had for about $4 a month.

I also wonder if a VPN

IRS Trancript / Account Activity how far back?

How far back can I get IRS transcripts and/or account activities or any other proof that I filed taxes in a certain year by using form 4506 or 4506T or a similar mail-in form?

I'm trying to get documentation from the year 1999 onward. [more]
