Ah, there's the catch. You have an old and/or cheap dishwasher. In which case, you're right, it's useless. Just wash by hand.

My feeling is that if I'm going to have a dishwasher, I'll have one that's good enough to do the job and thereby save me time. So I bought a top-rated one. Minimal scraping beforehand, no rinsing, everything gets clean in one cycle, and oh by the way it saves water.
