Qaz: am getting more call center calls answered in the Philippines.

Call centers are big business in the Philippines. A few years ago I was invested in the biggest player here (they got bought out). But It does not signal how strong the Philippines, but two other things: how cheap the labor force is and how good their AMERICAN English is. India (their main competitor)? We all spot the accent immediately! Many of my friends say they hang up when they hear the accent.

I have a number of friends who work in the call centers. This is the job to have if you are young, speak reasonable English, and can operate a computer. The hours are miserable (13 hours difference from EST, so all-night shifts). The big factor for the Philippines is not wage inflation, but currency rate shifts. The call centers are getting more expensive even without wage increases. The Philippine Peso is outperforming the US$.

Cheers,

Doug
