qazulight: You think the roaring 20’s was something? You ain't seen nothing until you’ve seen the roaring 2020’s!
Impressive very optimistic outlook and it’s hard to not come away with a more positive outlook for the future. Shure better than watching depressing covid news.
NVIDIA’s Jensen Huang always puts on a spectacular show of progress but this one is by far the best. I started working on array computer IC’s for image processing and neural networks way back in the mid 80’s. What little we did back then is pre-kindergarten baby steps compared to what is happening now. Almost (but not quite) wish I hadn’t retired and missed all that engineering excitement.
It appears to me that NVIDIA innovations today will have a similar impact that Intel microprocessors had in the 70’s and 80’s. Practically impressive is how their philosophy of making their software and tools readily available some of which you can download and run even without their hardware. The number of companies and universities they are teamed with has effectively sowed up the hardware source for AI/ML. Locally this morning the U of F Health announced a $100 million partnership with NIVIDA which they are calling GatorTron. This was only one of many partnerships Jensen mentions but what was mind boggling was that this is more than twice the football team’s budget.

Unholydave: I know Nvidia cards are popular in various forms of research for over a decade, including AI. . . . But that's still a high end niche. How does this turn into some larger sales volume of consumer products for Nvidia?

NIVIDIA’s profits presently are mostly from gamers. But where they are aiming for is the hardware and software in every car, truck, self-driving taxi, airplane plus a large portion of every data centers hardware and it looks like there is a possibility they will get a large share of it and that’s only the beginning. Automated smart traffic lights, smart home cameras that recognize who or what is approaching your home. As many things that we can conceive of now will turn out to be a small fraction of the things that will be invented as the AI capability becomes available at an affordable price.

Want to invent / develop your own smart gadget? Many thousands of individuals have bought one of NVIDIA’s Jetson developer kits for as little as $59 for the stand alone hardware including software. Look at some of their Community Projects to get an idea of some impressive things that can be done with relatively small low performance GPU chips.
