One company I have found to be far greater in market value than a mere natural gas company poised to generate revenues from the supposed natural gas boom of the next 2-3 years in the Rockies is Questar. First a little history and divergent look into the non-gas sector of its business.

Starting with a singular focus back in the 1920's, Questar went west in search of oil. But their stake produced gas. That fatal alteration in their plans has them well positioned for what many are saying is the fuel of choice in the new century. But it doesn't stop there. Questar doesn't just look for and produce natural gas. It moves and markets it also. It operates a stable public utility that supplies fast growing Salt Lake City and is one of the fastest growing utilities in the United States. Its coverage includes some 700,000 customers in Utah, Idaho, and Wyoming. Wise Paine Webber analyst Ron Barone likens the Corporation to an annuity with its 20% after-tax return. Additionally Questar is new economy literate budding an Internet business on the side. Consensus Inc. is building a chain of earthquake-resistant e-business centers whose services provide all-day WEB hosting and other network & e-business services. With a $30M stake (82% share) in Consensus, Questar is positioning the company for IPO in 2001. These diversities provide a energy-shock resistant quality to Questar IMHO since commodities such as natural gas historically can experience radical swings in price, profitability, and demand.

Next I'll investigate the gas market for Questar and its business picture.
