Questions:
1. Why the crash?
Hungry gremlins
2. What caused it?
Gremlins
3. Did I really fix it, if so how?
Gremlins need AC power. When you took that away, they left.
4. Did it fix itself (more likely, but how and why)
No, you fixed it by driving away the gremlins
5. Did I do everything I should have and will it happen again....if so, what should I do?
Most likely, the gremlins have moved on to your neighbor's computer. I would suggest moving far, far away right now!

:-)

Beats me... Some parameter stored only under power adapter power and not under battery power? Something got corrupted during the installation and it took several reboots for the system to resolve it? Flaky hard drive? Fingers crossed that it doesn't rear its ugly head again!
