Santa Rosa isn't in the "Central Valley" - at least not that I've heard.
And honestly it seems perfectly fine here to me. I haven't noticed anything even approaching pollution.

I think you may have misunderstood my post. I was saying that more than
LA in California have air quality problems. I don't believe I've been
to Santa Rosa but I'm sure it is lovely.
I lived in the San Jose area for a year or so and enjoyed my time
there and have spent several months at different times in the
area south of Anaheim down to Mission Veijo.
The coast of CA is lovely and wind-swept.
The central valley somewhat less so - but overall the state air
quality will never be pristine throughout.
California is known as one of the fairly few locations where
naturally occurring asbestos is found.
Still the region has a lot to offer.
Housing costs and taxes would keep me from considering the location
as a retirement destination - but I expect to go out there
with my DW once I officially retire.
