"But I sure do miss the smell of hot metal.

MichaelR"

Hi Michael,

Thanks for conjuring up an old memory for me. In the summer of 1963, I worked for a weekly newspaper here in my home town, reporting, writing, selling ads, and what have you. The linotype machines (two) were in the basement with one large press. The whole building was permeated with the smell of hot metal. I'd forgotten all about it until your post. It was a very enjoyable summer for many reasons, and I learned a great deal (proofreading being a large part of it). I'm not sure today's youngsters get the same training; it's unfortunate for them. My only real complaint was that the owner/publisher/editor also ran one of the linotype machines and had a bad habit of rewriting my sterling prose as he prepared the type. ;-)

Thanks again,

Cal
