"Had to" why? I've never wanted/needed to access my GOES account once I had gotten my card. We traveled abroad in late November (with no problems) and will be doing it again in 3 weeks.

Well, part of the change to Trusted traveler Program adds an individual's code, so that if your account is compromised, card lost, it will help you prove your identity without a face to face appointment is one thing mentioned.

At renewal time, your current GOES account will no longer work, so why not stay current?

All is well, until it isn't. So rather than fighting it, we opted to go with it... YMMV..
