"He said the state placed an order for 17,000 ventilators from China for $25,000 each, but it expects to get just 2,500 California, Illinois, the federal government and Italy also ordered the same ventilators.

“It’s like being on eBay with 50 other states bidding on a ventilator. ... How inefficient. And then FEMA gets involved and FEMA starts bidding. And now FEMA is bidding on top of the 50. So FEMA is driving up the price. What sense does this make?” Cuomo asked."

Yeah, shock and awe here today. Possibility of running low on supplies for our hospitals came up a couple days ago and our PM tossed $2 Billion and some of his best people at it.

Just saw an interview with a guy who offered to produce temporary dividers for hospitals from recycled material and donate them. He got a contract in just one day to ramp up production and couldn't believe he was on national TV telling the story.

As much as possible Trudeau wants the equipment produced in Canada so we don't have to compete with the world. We already have companies that produce ventilators (one is ramping from 30 a month to 400) and much of the other stuff can be done just about anywhere.

Federal government to spend $2 billion on protective, medical equipment

OTTAWA — The federal government is allocating $2 billion to buy and produce personal protective equipment and medical equipment, including masks, testing kits, gowns and ventilators.

“There's no question that we will need more masks, ventilators and testing kits. But how many more we need depends entirely on you. If you stay home and follow public-health recommendations, you can slow the spread,” Trudeau said Tuesday during his daily media briefing.

Included in that allotment will be funding for bulk purchases with provinces and territories.

Last week, the federal government announced a wartime-like procurement plan that included targeted funding for the production of necessary supplies such as ventilators masks and testing kits needed in the fight against COVID-19, specifically for Canadian companies that want to scale up production of these items or companies that want to shift their manufacturing to begin making them.

To facilitate this, the government put out a call to businesses that might be able to help — on Tuesday, Innovation Minister Navdeep Bains announced the government has received more than 3,200 emails from companies and has connected with 2,900 of them.

“From coast to coast to coast, businesses are retooling to produce face shields, ventilators, hand sanitizers and other supplies our health-care professionals need,” Trudeau said.

Trudeau said procurement agreements have been signed with Canadian companies Thornhill Medical, Medicom and Spartan Bioscience to purchase and increase capacity to manufacture equipment and supplies such as portable ventilators, surgical masks and rapid-testing kits.

It has also signed letters of intent with five companies — Precision Biomonitoring, Fluid Energy Group Ltd., Irving Oil, Calko Group and Stanfield’s — to produce additional testing kits, hand sanitizer and protective apparel such as masks and gowns.

“We know that the demand for critical equipment and supplies will grow in the coming weeks, so we need a sustainable, stable supply of these products,” Trudeau said. “That means making them at home,

Apology for the snips but lots happening and an interesting story.
