"I think the single most powerful factor that will benefit an economy is that its scarce resources are put to their most productive uses "

Excellent : looking at IT one must put the Mess Gates/Ellison/Gerstner etc into a hall of economic fame on and of their own -
as once stated by Mr Gates on the financial / tax effects of wintel on
the american national economy :

" Why not reflect ( just a bit ) on the number of american people our
global efforts financial effects do educate/cure etc etc ? "

Today we indeed see this lock gradually UN-locking , more´s the pitty .

> "backbone-wise" : pairing is not necessarily done state-sides anymore

> "PC" : administrations / offices are gradually switching to other OS
other software , other chips - IMO a point of diminishing returns was
crossed s. time ago concerning more/faster/"whatever" for prof. usage

> "mobile net" : there are other standards and other producers pervalent
in both Japan and Europe .

Still and all : "the best is jet to come" - there is a huge wealth of national / propr. tech in the pipelines moving forward to the markets

one sector ( examplary for many ) :

portale med-tech ( continuous medical sensors ) as future mob-telco app.

The basic sensor-tech is mostly american - there are variations of
"Cardio" / "Gluco" / "Tensio" / "Senior" / "Junior" / ~ "Asthma" - which
will revolutionize both the field of cronical illness AND the field of care/safety for senior/junior citizens - >> both realtime-data and
realtime interaction / intervention -- 24/24 and everywhere .

OR take the fut. energy-business ( oil-sands / fuel-cell /photovoltaic )

OR the whole of mil-tech - indeed the demise of the american miracle was
pronounced somewhat prematurely during the last decennia and this one .

but even so : the "global" outlook for most stocks is awfully bad IMO
