I agree, it sounds so wrong . . . so . . . so . . . so . . . pretentious. Unfortunately, the usage mavins who compile the Oxford Standard Dictionary indicate that the use as a verb in this sense dates back to at least 1400. One of the earliest appears to be Chaucer. Aaargh!!!!
