There was a film a few years back (Never Cry Wolf 1983?) that centered around a
fellow monitoring a pack of wolves. He tried an experiment to evaluate whether a
large mammal could survive on a diet of small rodents.

He tested the theory that wolves could live off of the local rodent supply
by doing so himself.

I imagine after getting past the tail issue, people would adapt.
After all, it is the one area in which we tend to excel.
