"The AR-15 is at the heart of the gun control debate. The civilian version of the M16, it's the most popular rifle in the country, with some 4 million in the hands of gun owners and a wildly passionate fan base. Its use in the mass shootings in Newtown, Conn., and Aurora, Colo., thrust the AR-15 into the national spotlight.

An anti-gun administration, along with certain like-minded members of the Congress and the media drove sales of the AR-15, not the mass murders. How many people bought firearms like those used at Columbine? The threat of banning the rifle, along with over-hyped news reports did far more to drive sales, and interest.

"The AR-15 is, essentially, a gun that was designed to inflict maximum casualties, death, and injury, in close to medium range. That's what it does," said gun control advocate and former NRA member Tom Diaz. "The real problem is that we allow that kind of firepower to come into a theater or into a first-grade class.""

"Allow" is a strange choice of words. Both the Aurora theater and the Sandy Hook Elementary School were "gun-free zones". Firearms were not "allowed" in either of these scenes where mass murders were committed. Not "allowing" is a very naive concept. Not "allowing", if anything, served to permit, if not attract, the perpetrators and did nothing to impede them... Chalk one mark for stupidity in making this comment.
