"They may be really bad people who are down on their luck"

This reminds me that in the summer of 1959, when I was working part time at a church in a small town in East Texas, a couple came by with a hard luck story. They wanted money, and I had none. I suggested that they come back later when the minister was there. They never showed up.

When I discussed it with the minister, I pointed out that there were some things in their story that just did not add up. I don't remember just what they were - after all, it was 1959.

But the minister said something that I have never forgotten: "People in that position are not very bright, and when they lie, they do not tell very good lies."
