"We seem to be in a cycle of global cooling."

That was the 70s back when there was a concern that the snow cover was going
to reflect heat back from the surface and trigger an ice age.
Turned out to be wrong.
A lot of science theories turn out to be wrong.
In and around the same time frame there was "peak oil".
And once upon a time - and repeated every so often - there is the "population
bomb" that is going to create starvation, pestilence and the end of the world as we know it.

I suspect the concept of the repeated worries is that sooner or later the world will
come to an end and the folks can proclaim "See! We told you!". Mainly because none of the
warnings comes with any real actions proposed to correct any real proposed causes.

Which I guess is just as well - since the folks who warn us all about the "end of the
world as we know it" never are really clever folks who could come up with fixes for
any real life problems.

But they can tell a good yarn.
Nothing gets folks riled up more than an unjustifiable worry.
