Chicago is going through a phase.
Recently they renamed Congress (major street, entryway to the Loop from the expressways) to Ida B. Wells.
They couldn't just call it Wells because that already exists.

Do you know who Ida B. Wells is? Probably not, and it's a bit unfortunate.
But does confusing people by renaming a major thoroughfare really change that? Not so much.

There is also talk of renaming Lake Shore Drive for Jean Baptiste Point du Sable.
Again, a significant figure in Chicago history, but Lake Shore Drive? Really?

Of course, this isn't really about history. It's about politics.
Renaming things (particularly those used heavily by rich white people) after dead black people is so much easier than improving schools or making Englewood safer.
This is window dressing, nothing more. Cuz it's more important to look like you care than to actually do something.

But I'll tell you what, Chicago. Do you really want to start a conversation about history?
Rename Western Avenue for Fred Hampton.
