http://www.cruisecritic (the cruise section of AOL) has been dividing cruises into separate categories and ranking the various ships. Royal Carribean is running away with it.

Best Overall

RCL was awesome here, placing six out of the top ten. The closest runner-up was Disney, placing twice. Princess and Radisson placed once each. CCL was shut out.

Explorer of the Seas
Grandeur of the Seas
Voyager of the Seas
Century
Galaxy
Millennium

Best Value for Price

You would expect Carnival to do well here. You'd be wrong. RCL again dominates, placing five out of the top ten. CCL only places once (albeit the top position) with one of its Seabourn ships. Princess, Radisson, Renaissance, and Norwegian round out the top ten.

Voyager of the Seas
Grandeur of the Seas
Century
Galaxy
Mercury

Best Overall Service

RCL dominates yet again, placing five times. CCL has two spots (one from its Seabourn line and one from Holland America). The rest of the top ten consists of ships from Princess, Radisson, and Crystal.

Grandeur of the Seas
Monarch of the Seas
Majesty of the Seas
Century
Nordic Express

Best Entertainment

It's closer here, but RCL still has the lead, placing three ships. Following right behind is Disney with two ships, Carnival with two ships, and Crystal with two ships. Norwegian has just one ship in the top ten.

Explorer of the Seas
Voyager of the Seas
Grandeur of the Seas

Best Food

RCL comes in first yet again, with four ships in the top ten. CCL has two ships (Windstar and a Holland America), Radisson has two, and Crystal has two.

Century
Mercury
Horizon
Galaxy

Best Fitness and Recreation

RCL is unbelievable here, placing seven ships in the top ten. Norweigian has one ship, Princess has one, and CCL has one with a Holland America ship.

Millennium
Voyager of the Seas
Explorer of the Seas
Mercury
Galaxy
Vision of the Seas
Century

Best Cabins

Oops, we lose this one! (not a surprise). Carnival has five ships in this category (three Holland Americas, a Seabourn and a Costa). We just have one ship in the best cabin category, as does Disney, Radisson, Renaissance and Crystal.

Century

Best Children's Programs

RCL and CCL each put three ships in this category. Not surprisingly Disney has the highest scores, but only places two ships (I'm not sure but I think Disney only has two ships). Placing one ship each is Princess and Norwegian.

Explorer of the Seas
Voyager of the Seas
Grandeur of the Seas

Best Shore Excursions

RCL is weak here, only placing once. (But we are still stronger than CCL, who is shut out of the category). Norwegian places four ships, Radisson two ships, and Renaissance, Silversea and American Hawaii place one ship each.

Monarch of the Seas

Best Embarkation Procedures

We lost this category to Princess, who places three ships, while Disney places two. RCL places just one ship, along with CCL, Radisson, Renaissance and Silversea.

Grandeur of the Seas

random thoughts

We were the only cruise line to place a ship in every category. In the most important category, best overall, we outdid all our competitors combined. Our competitors tend to do well in some categories and awful in others.

CCL was shut out of best overall and best shore excursions.

Disney was shut out of best value for price, best overall service, best shore excursions, best food, and best fitness and recreation.

Princess was shut out of best entertainment, best shore excursions, best food and best cabins.

Norwegian was shut out of best overall, best value for price, best overall service, best food, and best cabins.

Radisson was shut out of best entertainment, best children's programs, and best fitness and recreation.

I was shocked at how poorly Carnival did. Indeed, of its many brands, "Carnival" is arguably one of the weaker ones. Seabourn (4) and Holland America (4) placed in more categories than Carnival ships did (2). That sort of poor showing has to ultimately hurt the Carnival brand.
