PayPal overhauls iOS, Android apps with new payment options, offers

eBay-owned PayPal is rolling out updated applications for Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iOS and Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android, making it easier for users to complete mobile payments at restaurants and retailers.

PayPal version 5.0.1 introduces a redesigned user interface allowing users to more efficiently toggle between payment options--for example, accessing their checking account at one location and their credit card at another. PayPal users may also apply to finance purchases from inside the app by selecting the Bill Me Later option. "You also have the opportunity to get flexible financing and promotional offers such as 'six months to pay on purchases of $99 or more' from participating PayPal retailers," said PayPal Vice President of Global Product Hill Ferguson.

PayPal's new Shop tab identifies nearby merchants that accept in-store PayPal transactions: "You can then 'check in' and open a tab with just a swipe," Ferguson states. "You can change how you want to pay right on the 'check in' screen, meaning you've really got access to your entire wallet in the app. After you've paid, you'll see a confirmation alert and our usual PayPal email receipt."

Checking in additionally allows PayPal app users to order food ahead, bypassing the line at local restaurants and cafés. PayPal is launching the feature in partnership with thousands of eateries supporting the Eat24 digital food ordering platform. Also new: An Offers feature that stores deals to the PayPal wallet and automatically redeems discounts at checkout. PayPal is kicking off the program by loading $100 in offers from local U.S. businesses.
