There is so much poverty in Berks/Schuylkill counties, Reading was recently named the poorest midsize city in America which is saying something. This group delivered bags of produce to an elementary school on the days I tutored so I know there are needy children benefiting from these programs.

'We have been known as Greater Berks Food Bank since we first opened our doors, Thanksgiving week, 1983. In our first year of operation, we had only 12 member agencies and distributed 500,000 pounds of food. Over the years, as the need in our community grew, we tremendously expanded and strengthened our services and programs to meet the needs. In 1988, Schuylkill County also became part of our service area, designated by Feeding America, our national organization of food banks.

Today, we supply more than 300 charitable food programs and distribute 7 million pounds of food annually. While in many corners of our community our name is easily recognized as the leader in local food assistance, in other areas our name recognition lacks. As stated, we have proudly helped nourish the hungry in Schuylkill County for over 30 years, and for some time we have desired a name that better reflected this fact.

Our focus on delivering healthy, fresh produce and dairy, and frozen meats, to better nourish hungry families, has also grown significantly. Just ten years ago, fresh and frozen perishable items represented only about 10–15% of our annual distributions. Today, these healthy food offerings represent approximately 60%! Most of these fresh items are also being provided to those in need through our own direct distribution programs (Mobile Markets, Mobile Direct and Produce 4 Kids).'
