We recently rented a car while on vacation with Avis. They placed a "hold amount" on the Visa card we rented the car with. I saw this amount online as a charge for $100. Well, about 2 days after we were driving the car, someone fraudulently used this same Visa card (in another state), so we had it cancelled and Chase issued a new Visa card with a new card number. Now, when I look online at the Visa charges, this $100 has disappeared (as we have now finished our vacation and turned the car back into Avis.)

Does anyone know how this hold thing works when you rent a car? We drove this car on a couple of toll roads, and I have researched online that there should be toll charges billed by the car rental company. But, now they do not have our new Visa card number. I am just wondering how the "hold" amount works if you change Visa cards in the middle of the car rental. Thanks in advance for your help.
