One of our rental units has a bedbug problem. (Not that rare these days.) But I'm wondering how expenses should count taxwise. Some of the work will involve tearing up the old carpeting and installing new carpets. There may also be some new (second-hand) furniture.

Are any or all of the expenses suitable for Schedule E? Do some get added to the basis of the property? Do some get depreciated? (If so, I suppose that the various items will have various depreciation periods....)
