Right or wrong, I find it difficult to get past this:

(he left service 36 months short of the necessary 20 years)

Having been on active duty and up for reenlistment, I know that he probably could have picked any job of his choice (that did not require highly specialized skills) if he simply wanted tread water for three more years. That, or simply see if he could get discharged for medical and still get benefits.

The fact that he made a poor decision to leave hampers anything we could do for him outside of his normal VA benefits.

Beyond that, I think "witness protection" should be granted to anyone in such a position to have been responsible for such a high profile operation.
