I'm new to this and don't know what to do next. Any helpful suggestions are appreciated.

Well this is mainly to let you know you are not alone with the new part, cause I am too.

But this site has been a great help to me, so hopefully it can be for you too.

I worked in engineering for 30 years and then found out that I had better get one hell of a lot smarter about investing than I had been, earlier this year, as a result of an early retirement also.

I would suggest starting with the 13 Steps to Foolish Investing you will find on this site, with like a step or two a day, they are an easy read.
(this is my first try at including an address so hope it works)
http://www.fool.com/school.htm

If the steps make sense, then the "Motley Fool Investment guide" (or if all of this is really like a lesson in crytography the book "You have more than you think" (both of the books are by the Garderner's the founders of the Motely Fool) make an excellent next step.

(I read the Investment guide before the Have more book was available and I understood most of it, so have not picked up the Have more book).

Anyway hope this is some help.
