I've been blaming my ISP for months for a crappy connection. I should apologize! The problem seems to be a faulty RJ45 connection! As with all intermittent failures it was difficult to discover.

My ADSL modem in now 19 years old! The Ethernet cable has not been connected that long. At first the modem required a cable that reversed the signals. My latest Airport must be five to ten years old. Anyway, the contacts deteriorated to the point of interrupting the signals. I changed the cable and problem solved -- or so it seems.

The ADSL modem still works after 19 years but it had a bad accident, a bronze candleholder fell on it breaking the plastic case. In case you are wondering...

This is a custom made home office back when AppeTalk was the network protocol. The box on the wall was my attempt at taming the cabling - a bunch of power and RJ-11 connectors -- the box is decorated with my family memorabilia. The cables fall out of the way behind the desk. The candleholder on the right fell on the ADSL modem (CISCO 677) breaking the plastic cover!

It's time to replace the ADSL modem. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Denny Schlesinger

* The Airport in the picture has been replaced with an Airport Express and the Ethernet hub is gone.
