One more little reveal in the armor around Romney -- the separation if you will between us mortals and those in the stratosphere.
Please tell me he can't be that clueless. Now I really am getting scared if he wins.

Mitt Romney wants airplane windows to roll down in case of fire so people can breathe more easily
http://tinyurl.com/c7xenwd
<snip>
Romney: When you have a fire in an aircraft, there’s no place to go, exactly, there’s no — and you can’t find any oxygen from outside the aircraft to get in the aircraft, because the windows don’t open. I don’t know why they don’t do that. It’s a real problem. So it’s very dangerous. And she was choking and rubbing her eyes. Fortunately, there was enough oxygen for the pilot and copilot to make a safe landing in Denver...

Either:

(1) The story comes from the Onion

(2) Mitt was pulling someones' leg

If not #1 or #2, I think Romney is toast.

I've been thinking about this. I even typed a snarky response and then abandoned it.

I'm going to cut Mitt some slack on this one - Ann was on that plane and Mitt probably panicked at the very idea of her being in danger. I can imagine that Ann, with MS, is very frightened of being unable to breathe. I don't know a lot about MS but I think that eventually you don't have the muscle strength to breath in and out.

Maybe I'm all wrong on this, but I see a loving husband frightened for his wife.

I agree with Waldo. His wife was in danger -- don't expect perfect rationality in this case.

What we are talking about is actually core scientific understanding. A gut feeling for how low the air pressure is outside of a jet plane flying at 30,000 feet, and how risky it would be to have a passenger operated window (even if you could seal it perfectly).

I'm sure we have had competent Presidents who have lacked basic scientific knowledge. But it's nice when they do have it.

During his campaign Obama visited Google headquarters. There was a question and answer period and to start it off the CEO asked him this question:

“What is the most efficient way to sort a million 32-bit integers?”

It was a joke and he was about to go on to his real question when Obama responded:

“Well, I think the bubble sort would be the wrong way to go.”

Which is quite true since a bubble sort is one of the slowest sorting algorithms. But one would not expect a "community organizer" to know this.

Schmidt put his hand to his forehead in disbelief, and the room erupted in raucous applause.

Obama is a very smart and widely educated individual who gives me a lot of confidence that he can handle whatever is thrown at him.

Oh, come on. We've all seen the airplane movies where the stuff goes flying when a hole is punched in the plane.

I'm thinking the same reasoning is why he put his dog on the roof of the car.

If you watch the actual video you see the followup question is "who spied for you" and Obama says "we've got a few people"

So this is not a great example of Obama thinking on his own.

SP1 So this is not a great example of Obama thinking on his own.

In any case it is a great example of Obama being on top of the situation.

Which is what we want in a President, n'est-ce pas?

A lie when he says he was innocently walking back to his truck when TM attacks him? That should be obvious.

Please give me your take on the timeline.

Please include:

* TM statement "He is right behind me."

(Or if you believe the gf made this up, say so.)

* Phone goes dead

I'm with Jean on this. I have known for decades by just watching movies that you can't open jet windows, or if a plane has a hole in the fuselage, everything flies around and the plane is in grave danger. In fact, don't oxygen masks drop down automatically or can be dropped by the pilots? Isn't that what the comments at the beginning of the flight says every single time - if they lose air pressure the masks will drop down? Maybe the fire prevented that somehow but everyone should already know about losing cabin pressure.

I guess Romney may not watch movies. Is that a Mormon thing?

And re: his fear for his wife. This was an interview much later. I grant you he might have answered crazily if he had just found out. But I still say there is something wrong with that man's brain! Over and over there is evidence that Romney thinks differently than someone like me--a little speck of humanity with very little money. He lives in a rarefied world and his thought processes are just not the same as the average person.

This is not an onion story. It is real. BTW you should check out the comments on some of the articles posted on the internet tube machine. What fun!

Gee, I can't imagine why the Free Market hasn't supplied this demand? Perhaps Mitt is suggesting the gummint step in and mandate this?

lt Maybe the fire prevented that somehow but everyone should already know about losing cabin pressure.

They didn't lose cabin pressure and apparently the oxygen masks never dropped.

It was some kind of electrical fire and the fumes were bothersome.

I believe they were on the ground in about ten minutes.

Romney should have kept his mouth shut. The guy can't catch a break. (heh, heh)

That's no excuse for believing something stupid, and there is certainly no call for retaining that fear after the fact. A leader has to be rational and lead in the face of danger and fear.

I can't imagine Churchill or Roosevelt saying something that dim because of fear.

I honestly get the feeling that Romney is an empty vessel with no curiosity, no interest in anything but himself and his immediate wealthy circle of friends, and nothing to show for his years attending college and taking up space that could have gone to someone who actually wanted to learn something.

He is a political wind-sock with "values" that seem to change depending on his audience. About the only thing I get from the guy is that he wants to be President because that would be ... well... just too cool.

And it would be quite an achievement for someone who matches G.W. Bush in "intellect" and curiosity about the world.

Unfortunately, for him to achieve that goal many millions of us would be forced to suffer under the grinding fascist foot.

"It takes a lot of talent to put your foot in your mouth when your head is up your a##."

Or...

"Hey, Mittens, maybe this is why...

Joe Patroni: When I was a mechanic in the Air Force, I was being transferred on a MATS plane, At 20,000 feet, one of the windows shattered. The guy sitting next to it was about 170 pounds. He went through that little space like a hunk of hamburger going down a disposal, and right after him coats, pillows, blankets, cups, saucers.... And THEN watch out! At that altitude, you can't breathe. So unless they get on oxygen in 45 seconds, it's good-bye!"
