Greetings Fools,

I am interested in opening a Roth IRA Vanguard Index Fund. I would like to be using a higher output vehicle, like the Foolish Four, but the commisions would eat me alive for the next few years.

Once I get my index fund built up nicely, I would like to realign it into stocks using my deep discount broker. What are the penalties, if any, of dealing with a Roth IRA in this fashion?

No penalties, just paperwork. As long as you do "transfers" when you move your IRA from one custodian to another, there are no limits on how many transfers you may do. A transfer requires that one institution send payment directly to the other rather than sending you a check.

After that its all investment risk. Good luck to you.
