Before I open a Roth IRA (figure it is a better deal since a traditional IRA would be nondeductible for me anyway and at least I get the extra tax break out of the Roth) I do have one question. Is there a rule on the order in which Roth distributions must be taken? IE, I have to exhaust my non-Roth retirement accounts first, or I have to take the Roth distributions first?I also seem to recall seeing something about no distributions within 5 years, but I can't remember the details on it.Thanks so muchCindy
Withdrawals from Roth IRA's is independent of all other IRA's. However, you are correct the waiting period forTax free withdrawal from a Roth is 5 years. Bear in mind you must be older than 59 1/2 before you can with-draw without facing early withdrawl penalties; this ischaracteristic of all IRA's with certain exceptions. -- Matthew
I believe the 5 year waiting period is only on the earnings in your ROTH. Contributions may be withdrawn tax and penalty free at any time. Not the best idea though.
