Before I open a Roth IRA (figure it is a better deal since a traditional IRA would be nondeductible for me anyway and at least I get the extra tax break out of the Roth) I do have one question.

Is there a rule on the order in which Roth distributions must be taken? IE, I have to exhaust my non-Roth retirement accounts first, or I have to take the Roth distributions first?

I also seem to recall seeing something about no distributions within 5 years, but I can't remember the details on it.

Thanks so much

Cindy

Withdrawals from Roth IRA's is independent of all other IRA's. However, you are correct the waiting period for
Tax free withdrawal from a Roth is 5 years. Bear in mind you must be older than 59 1/2 before you can with-
draw without facing early withdrawl penalties; this is
characteristic of all IRA's with certain exceptions.

I believe the 5 year waiting period is only on the earnings in your ROTH. Contributions may be withdrawn tax and penalty free at any time. Not the best idea though.
