Saddam boasted and showed off a Koran that he wrote in blood

I remember that one. It was in one of the new mosques that his "oil-for-food" built.

Until the fall of Baghdad in April, all 640 pages were displayed in individual, gilt-edged frames in a pavilion on an island that sits on a man-made lake at the Mother of All Battles Mosque.

How typically Muslim - naming a place supposedly of worship "mother of all battles". Sort of like the "Victory over Huguenots" cathedral in Belgium.

Their task is not easy because of an appalling contradiction - for Muslims, it is heretical to render the Koran in blood, an impurity that should be washed away. On the other hand, the Koran defines absolutely their religious beliefs and culture - it cannot be destroyed.

Sort of a "catch-22".
