Scott,

Those products had the benefit of Windows behind them (including the benefit of MSFT being able to tweak things to lessen the compatibility of competing products). That OS dominance hasn't helped them as much with more recent products, and I don't see how it helps them that much here.

Actually, it had very little to do with the dominance of Windows, though a few competitors clearly aided Microsoft's takeover of those markets by (1) ignoring Windows, in spite of clear guidance from Microsoft that Windows would be the operating system of the future for standard personal computers, and (2) squandering resources that should have gone into development on lawsuits against other competitors that were completely without merit (the lawsuit by Lotus Development Corporation against Borland International, Inc., alleging copyright infringement over an optional Quattro Pro menu configuration that provided the same sequences and shortcuts as the menu system in 1-2-3, which put both companies into deep financial binds, which ended in a ruling that there could not be copyright infringement because menu sequences were analogous to the control/instrument panel in an automobile, and thus not subject to copyright, by the First Circuit Court of Appeals, for example).

But these products are far from the only instances in Microsoft has come from behind to gain dominance.

Norm.
