Wow... it's worse than I thought. A Catholic cardinal in Chicago is giving Archbishop Chaput a run for his money in the race to be the most ridiculously hateful Catholic in America.

Secularism, he said, is just “communism’s better-scrubbed bedfellow.”

Not only that, he's dangerously misguided as to what secularism actually is. Someone needs to get the cardinal a dictionary. Oh... hey, here's one:

sec·u·lar·ism n.
1. Religious skepticism or indifference.
2. The view that religious considerations should be excluded from civil affairs or public education

Yeah, how dare they. I guess maybe he's worried about a future American society where the government's entirely secular and nearly everyone's an atheist. Because that would obviously be worse than hell. I guess he's never heard of this place:

Two other audacious ones:

1. Cardinal George said his predecessor Cardinal George Mundelein acted similarly in his 1937 criticisms of Adolph Hitler, whose Nazi government had dissolved Catholic youth groups, silenced the German bishops in the media and tried to discredit the Church’s work through putting on trial priests, monks and sisters accused of immorality.

Oh, yeah, Catholics were totally persecuted by Nazis. Except for the part where they were often in bed with them, with many of the Vatican's German reps sanctioning, and even praising, Hitler's actions(a,b).

2. Twice he says secularism is on the wrong side of history and Catholicism is on the right side. Which is funny, because it's exactly the opposite of the truth. Not a lie, because I believe this whack job is honestly mistaken, but it's dangerous because as a cardinal, he speaks for so many people who depend on him to do their thinking for him. And if this is the thinking, then it's no wonder atheists are the most hated minority in the country(c), and it's not close.

The funny thing about the Cardinal's attack on Secularists is that he's doing it in the context of explaining his position that persecution of Catholics is right around the corner. Fearmonger, much?

“I am (correctly) quoted as saying that I expected to die in bed, my successor will die in prison and his successor will die a martyr in the public square”
Cardinal Mundelein had warned that there is no guarantee “that the battlefront may not stretch some day into our own land.” American Catholics’ silence could mean that “we too will be fighting alone.” [as the Jews of Nazi Germany did, thanks in large part, ironically, to staunch Vatican indifference]

And of course, his swinging his verbal fists around like this virtually guarantees he'll be able to say he's right if people call him on his blatant bigotry and incendiary, fear-laden antagonism. Thing is, those doing so probably won't be attacking Catholicism, just his disgusting remarks. I'm betting he won't see the distinction. The peace of our society is in danger when those who are supposed to know better make such irresponsible statements. And it sickens me.
