Seems like they should have an eprom in the units so that if the battery does go dead, you don't have to reactivate the unit. I have XM and i take it out all the time to connect to my home stereo and I don't have to reactivate it.

The original poster didn't say, but I'm guessing it is a factory installed receiver that isn't designed to be removed.
