What is the best resource for researching index funds? I am a new investor with a self-directed 401K plan through my employer. They match 25 cents to the dollar and give a 3% gift at the end of the year. I make about 30K and plan to invest 5%.
Thanks for your advice--

Right here on the Fool, for starters, just follow the link below. Be prepared, there are many links at this page, but you're sure to find a few things that you'll find useful:

http://www.fool.com/school/mutualfunds/mutualfunds.htm?ref=G02C06

And this chart:

Also, there's : http://www.indexfunds.com , which, goes without saying, has plenty of info. Vanguard ( http://www.vanguard.com ) is the king of all index fund companies. If that option is available in your 401k, I would jump at that opportunity.

And some of the research sites: http://www.morningstar.com and http://www.moneycentral.msn.com will help as well.

Make sure the index(s) you select is a no-load, has a low turnover, has low fees and follows the index closely.
