Stock and/or fund selections are entirely up to you based on your own analyses and investigations. If you're asking how to set up the IRA, it's simple. Just tell the broker of your choice you have an old 401k plan you wish to have transferred to a self-directed IRA within which you may do your own trading. The broker will guide you through the necessary steps to do that to ensure there will be no adverse tax impacts to you. Just ensure you have the money transferred directly from the plan custodian to the new IRA custodian, and there won't be any problems.
