Hi there,

Share Our Strength, one of our 2007 Foolanthropy Charities, asked us to share some information with our readers about a new project they're working on with Heifer and Conservation International. I thought the folks here may be interested.

Give a Better Present,
Change the World

(Washington, DC) October 22, 2007— This year Americans will spend an estimated $500 billion during the annual holiday shopping frenzy – often buying gifts that will be returned or quickly forgotten - while nearly three billion people in the world live on less than $2 a day, more than 12 million children go to bed hungry in America on any given night, and climate change is devastating habitats and species worldwide.

In the face of such startling statistics, three leading charities -- Heifer International, Conservation International, and Share Our Strength -- have joined forces to change the way people think about holiday giving.

Through a joint pledge program called "Give a Better Present for a Better Future" the three charities aim to build a community of individuals committed to making at least one alternative gift in honor of someone on their gift list during the 2007 holiday season.

The three charities share common values that underpin their innovative, community-based programs that attack the related problems of hunger, poverty and the environmental degradation at the grassroots. At a time when many charities compete for year-end contributions, Heifer, Conservation International and Share Our Strength are creating a partnership to call attention to the value of alternative giving.

When people make alternative gifts of donations to charitable causes, it changes the holidays from a season of "getting" to a season of sharing and celebrating traditional values that seek to make the world a better place for everyone.

The three organizations recognize that no single person or organization can achieve lasting change on their own. Through the "Give a Better Present for a Better Future" pledge drive and public service campaign, the groups hope to create the largest online community ever formed in the name of alternative holiday giving.

"We're seeking to inspire people to make a conscious choice to take the pledge. We want to shed light on the reality that we live in an interconnected world and that everyone can make a difference by giving," said Share Our Strength Executive Director Billy Shore. "It's not just about getting checks written. The future of our planet and its children has never been more at risk than now. Through this partnership, we know we can achieve more than if we go it alone."

"Give a Better Present for a Better Future" revolves around one simple act: to give at least one gift toward a healthier planet and the security of future generations in honor of someone you love. Every donation will support one of these organizations in building better communities and stronger, self-reliant families for the next generation.

So this year, why not give a gift that always fits and no one will return? Take the pledge to give "Give a Better Present for a Better Future" this holiday season.
