Looking for a short story titled "Green Thumb" about a living plant that comes to earth. I know it is a needle in a haystack but that is all the info I have.

Could it be the one by Clifford Simak? That came to my mind immediately, but according to http://www.best.com/~contento/l37.html there are 5 stories with this title.

Hope this helps

Apparently the Simak story - if it is the one you are looking for - was anthologised in "The Worlds of Clifford Simak". I found this contents list:

WORLDS OF CLIFFORD SIMAK (also published in Britain as ALIENS FOR NEIGHBOURS)
The Big Front Yard
Carbon Copy
Death Scene
Dusty Zebra
Founding Father
Green Thumb
Honorable Opponent
Idiot's Crusade
Jackpot
Lulu
Neighbor
Operation Stinky

I've been trying to write one for nearly that long (a bit of an exaggeration here - probably closer to 20 years) with no luck. It is probably time to start again. I might have time for it now my job is disappearing.
