Sleazy debt collectors (as opposed to regular non-sleazy debt collectors) are taking tactics to a new low, including (it is alleged) threatening to dig up the dead bodies of the debtor's children.

http://money.cnn.com/2013/02/06/pf/debt-collection/index.htm...

I realize that calling people who don't pay their bills is an annoying job, and if the collection agency offers a commission for money recovered I can also understand the determination of the collectors to force people to pay, but some of this stuff is way over the line.

And that's an interesting paragraph at the bottom about people scamming the debtors into thinking they are paying off the debt, when it is actually going into the scammers' pockets, and the actual debt is still unpaid. I hope that group is shut down fast.

Windowseat,

The referenced article, http://money.cnn.com/2013/02/06/pf/debt-collection/index.htm... contained the following quote that made me laugh:

After calling her incessantly over a $300 payday loan debt -- which she said she already paid -- a collector even called her workplace and told her coworkers he was going to come arrest her and they would have to pick her out of a lineup.

I mean, Come on! What idiot would think it's believable that a coworker would be needed as a witness to something they know nothing about?

Joel,

you said, I mean, Come on! What idiot would think it's believable that a coworker would be needed as a witness to something they know nothing about?

Well, Joel, think back over some of the people and comments over the years. There are many, many people in the world who don't understand how the legal system works, and who don't understand who may or may not be called as witnesses.

There are criminals who have killed police dogs because they have been told that the dog's testimony (in tracking a person by scent) would be included in the trial, and they thought that meant the dog would be put in the witness stand and would point to them. So if the dog was dead, it couldn't testify. If you talk to anyone who is involved in criminal law they will explain, in detail, just how stupid some people are.

And stupidity doesn't stop at Crimlaw. I've been watching various snippets of Judge Judy over the past couple of weeks, and there are some staggeringly stupid people bringing lawsuits. One of the best examples? A woman had a caterer for her daughter's wedding. After the wedding the daughter decided to file for an annulment. So the mother filed suit to get her money back from the caterer. After all, an annulment meant that the marriage never took place. So since the marriage didn't exist, she should get her money back. (No, I have no idea if she also sued the florist and the place where they bought the dress).

Yes, we laugh. But there is an incredible amount of stupidity out there, and I'm not surprised that co-workers thought they might be forced to testify.

I suppose it wouldn't really matter if the cow-orkers believed they'd have to pick her out of a lineup. The point was to make enough trouble for her @ work that she would just pay to get rid of the collector.

A friend recently got me watching Judge Judy. I've seen it about 7 times and cringe at so many of the cases. It's hard to believe people can be so dumb (and/or entitled) sometimes. :/

We had one try to use guilt on me to pay my mother's student loans off.

something like, didn't we want to do the right thing and settle my mother's debt?

I told her we would be more than happy to pay off the loans if they were willing to finish raising her two minor children.

We haven't heard back, so I guess they didn't want two kids?

Some of them apparently run cemeteries. Why anyone would provide funeral/burial services on credit is beyond me.
