So, a lot of the analysis on whether to rent or buy is very location specific. The fact that the author doesn't mention the issue of location at all in his article makes me annoyed that I fell for the click bait.

I can second that comment. I'm currently administering my brother's Estate. He owns(-ed) a condo in Cambridge which he rented out. When I looked at the lease, I saw that he was charging far less than the typical 0.8-1% of FMV per month that I'm used to in NJ. Then I looked at rental comps and discovered that he was at market rates. Cambridge MA seems to have a local dislocation in the relationship between ownership and rental costs.
