So here they are competing
against the combined investment in research of Microsoft, IBM, HP, and the open-source efforts
of linux, as far as advancing their operating system.

From where I sit, Sun owns the Unix server market, and it's a big market. IBM and HP are the ones quaking in their boots as Sun introduces faster cheaper machines. This is a growing market where more than one company can succeed, and Sun has many differentiating factors which make it an industry leader.
I don't own any SUNW stock, regrettably.
