So if you sold at 200 and got back in at 201, but were out for the trip down to 100-----do you consider that a failure of the timing system?

Umm, yes.

I don't really care about downturns from which the market recovers to reach new highs. If a timing system can't do better than that, then it may be good for only one thing - the Black Swan, i.e. the once in a lifetime situation where the market tanks and never recovers back in your lifetime.
