So, today, you can plunk your laptop on a desktop and plug in a bunch of cables (or use Bluetooth) to connect a keyboard, mouse and monitor or two.

I have one cable (leading to a powered USB hub) plugged into my laptop for three external mass-storage devices and a mouse. If I wanted to also use an external keyboard... I'd unplug the mouse, plug in an unpowered USB hub in its place, and plug the mouse and keyboard into that.

Video, I'd need either a USB-to-HDMI adapter or a second cable plugged into my laptop.

(Laptop also has a power cord. And at the moment it doesn't have a battery - that swelled so much it slightly bent the case, so it's sitting over to the side awaiting replacement.)
