Some people do it for the challenge, and once they’ve made it, the thrill is gone.

Others discover that it’s lonely at the top and miss the camaraderie that came easier when they were lower on the totem pole.

Still others hit their ‘number’ and want to enjoy their money and family while they still can.

And every once in awhile, a person that is exceptionally valued to the organization is offered a senior role in order to delay his or her retirement, with the understanding from day one that it’s not a long term spot. Usually this is accompanied with some sort of instructions to groom another person who will be expected to hold the spot for the longer term but for whatever reason wasn’t viewed as ready at the time the spot came open.
