Generac Solar Business Unlikely To Have Material Impact On SolarEdge Or Enphase $ENPH

TJ Roberts comment:
Damn good stuff IMHO

@hummingbird228 @zver11 @EnerTuition With regards to Encharge 3.3. and Encharge 10, the release of Ensemble Storage in Q4 aka Encharge, is really directed at the IQ6 and IQ7 hoards; they bought into IQ, and although not waiting for the Holy Grail of all microinverters, the IQ8, they will not be Osborned (snubbed) by doing so; their IQ's do not have the processing speed to form a microgrid, but with a 1:1 (?) match of IQ8's to IQ6/7's, a microgrid will be possible, and as an upgrade it will be simple and require no roof work, and for most people, no permit either. With 12 IQ8's in the Encharge 10, the leverage will probably push a sale of 2 for the 24 IQ7's on the roof. It shrewdly forces a sale of more storage. There's 13k ACB customers in APAC, so that's going to b a great market for retrofit since all that will be needed is an IQ Envoy firmware upgrade, the ATS and the storage and voila! you have a microgrid solution. I wonder if the ACB's will be part of it (???). Anyway, I still think that once Flex China and Mexico are ramped up with IQ8, then IQ8 micros will fly off the shelf, hopefully before mid-2020. Demand should be huge considering IQ8 will be a serious impetus for upgrading. Another thought which would seriously push sales would be if (2) M215's could be replaced with (1) IQ8 and the (2) 245W panels, for example, are connected in series. That would halve the cost of an upgrade. So @hummingbird228 although Enphase's Ensemble Storage will not be able to differentiate itself from the microgrid competition out of the gate, in time they will for sure once complete IQ8 grid-agnostic, microgrid-forming solutions are installed. It's just the IQ6/7 customers get served first. However, out the gate, the fault-tolerance aka reliability of multiple inverters (3 of 4 can fail in 3.3 model and unit still operates...try that with a hybrid Solaredge inverter), the safety, the passive cooling, and the flexibility of upgrade are powerful attributes. I think the IQ8 will drive an upgrade market in the solar arena that has never been seen before. For the Long Tail, a 1 day job of converting a system to IQ8's and breathing new value into an existing system in places like Hurricane Alley and all the alleys of the world, will be worth it. And, the upgrade can be done to any anti-islanding solar PV system, not just Enphase only.
