Sorry I'm chiming in late on this discussion.

So before I subject myself to future nightmares, I need to know just how horror is Lovecraft?

Most of his horror, IMO, is kind of dated, which is not to say it's not a good read. If you're looking for graphic horror a la Stephen King, forget it. Lovecraft is somewhere between Poe and Clive Barker, more nightmare than anything else, and he leaves the gory descriptions to the reader's imagination. Forget his forays into science fiction, they're boring.

I was reading "Pickman's Model" on the Boston T. Just when it got to the part of the story where the narrator is describing one of Pickman's paintings, "Subway Accident" where unspecified werecreatures had broken onto the Copley Street platform and were attacking the passengers, the T conductor announced, "Next stop, Copley!" I was supposed to get off at that stop but suddenly found myself too creeped out to get off the train. I got off at the next stop and walked back.
