The ancestors of the dog breed 'Australian Shepherd' is so named, it is thought, because Basque (Spain) sheepherders brought them with them from the Pyrenees to manage sheep in Australia. Then some of them moved on to the US west, again bringing their dogs for the same purpose - herding sheep and cattle. It was in the US where these dogs were finally bred and recognized as a distinct breed. Therefore fans of the breed want the name changed to 'American Shepherd'.

The common thread is that dogs move with their owners - because their owners value them to do a vital job for them. Maybe this breed should be called Basque Shepherds.
