Checking my brokerage account this morning, came across a first for me. There was an invalid symbol listed: G7945M107 and a number of shares. Had to look at Quicken to see what it should have been, which was STX. Searching on the invalid symbol and "Seagate", led to this graph.

There has definitely been an increase in fails-to-deliver the last month or so, though the report only goes through the end of April.

So, most likely, the shares in my account were loaned out. Usually when some new symbol shows up, it's a spinoff I wasn't aware of. We'll see how quickly it gets resolved. Hope I have no reason to try to sell shares while in this state.
