I thought about posting this on the retirement income thread, but decided to start a new one.

I was reading an article the other day - think it was on CNN Money - about these "surprise nest eggs" we hear about from time to time. Like the guy who worked as a janitor his whole life and had $1MM+ when he died and left part of it to the school. Or, the cleaning woman who took in washing her whole life and had the same to leave to some school or church or something.

Anyway, I found it was interesting the reactions, especially of relatives who didn't know they had it. Some were actually angry that they either didn't treat themselves when they were alive or share it with the family while they could.

Realistically, I think this will become more commonplace with old-fashioned pensions going away and people saving for themselves, especially Fools. I mean, with a 4-5% SWR, living on $45k when you've got over a million socked away will probably look crazy to those you leave behind, in hindsight. But, as well all know, there's just no way to know how long it needs to last until you're gone.

I guess I was surprised that the author of the article didn't point this out.
