Surprisingly, we're both attracted to the same two-seater, the BMW Z4 M Coupe

You would be doing yourself an extreme disservice to buy a limited-use two seater as a third car and NOT get a convertible. Trust me on this one. Other than that, no objections on the Z4, it sounds like it could meet your requirements pretty well.

However, as much as you seem to enjoy the RSX Type-S, you should really take a ride in an S2000 before you decide on a 2-seater. I strongly recommend a pre-2004 with the 9k rpm 2.0L, newer models have a 8k rpm 2.2L. I don't know if it satisfies your wife's need for brand cachet, but it sure doesn't look like a run-of-the-mill Honda either.
