A situation that could rapidly run out of control with dire consequences for the 'whole' region.

A senior US official voiced opposition to Kurdish autonomy in northern Syria, saying on Monday that Syria should remain united. "We don't see for the future of Syria an autonomous Kurdish area or territory. We want to see a Syria that remains united," Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Philip Gordon said in Istanbul.
“We’ve been clear both with the Kurds of Syria and our counterparts in Turkey that we don’t support any movement towards autonomy or separatism, which we think would be a slippery slope. We are very clear about that.” Gordon, however, also emphasized that the Syrian opposition needs to be inclusive and give a voice to all groups in Syria, including the Kurds.

But for Turkey, the refugee issue is a mere inconvenience compared to what it thinks will be the biggest fall-out of the Syrian crisis - the Kurds and Kurdistan.

In an almost mirror image of what happened in Iraq after 1991, Kurdish nationalists in northern Syria are making the most of the turmoil and violence in the rest of the country to strengthen their own identity and position.

It doesn't bode well for the future with most of the participants seeing America as the 'Great Satan'.
