You wrote, The futuristic door handles on Tesla Inc.’s Model S are being blamed for a fatal crash in which a police officer was unable to pull a man to safety from his burning car. Omar Awan, a 48-year-old anesthesiologist, was driving his leased Tesla in February when he lost control on a south Florida parkway and the car slammed into a palm tree, according to a wrongful death lawsuit filed in state court in Broward County.

A police officer couldn’t open the doors because the handles were retracted and bystanders watched helplessly as the car filled with smoke and flames

I don't understand. Explain again how futuristic door handles ... [cause this] fatal crash...?

What you mean is that the officer couldn't open a locked door and that recessed door handles confused the officer at the scene and s/he wasn't mentally quick enough to use their weapon to smash out the window and reach inside the vehicle. Right?

If I were in the jury I'm not at all sure I'd find for plaintiff here. The handles were not the proximate cause of the crash. They might have been a small contributing factor in Mr. Awan's death, but only because they helped delay the officer's rescue effort. But doors can become jammed in a high speed crash. That isn't necessarily the fault of the designer or manufacturer - doors aren't designed to survive every possible type of collision. And there are many scenarios where they would not be operable.

In fact if I had such an accident a responding officer would find my doors locked. Yet I don't driver a Tesla. The officer should have been trained to deal with doors that you can't open from the outside in a crash. They should be the *normal case*.

Get over it. This is a nuisance suit against Tesla. Nothing to see here. Move on.
